my funny valentine

ok, i know it's nowhere near february 14th, but bobby valentine did get fired from the boston red sox last friday, so i'll take any excuse to post a vintage valentine on this blog. ;)

i used to have such a passion for baseball, especially for the red sox. however, i've had no desire to follow major league baseball over the past few years. (i haven't watched or listened to a complete ballgame since 2009.)

*sigh* it's rather sad when a passion fades away.

snow white & the headless dwarf

i had purchased these vintage cake toppers of snow white & the seven dwarfs from a brimfield dealer three years ago. i had completely forgotten about these figurines until my sister uncovered them the other day while searching for another item. unfortunately one of the dwarfs' heads became detached as i was arranging them for display on a bookshelf. so now the poor dwarf's head is sitting in a wheelbarrow, waiting for the day to be glued back onto his body with an epoxy adhesive.
. . .
you'll notice that three of the seven dwarfs do not appear in this photo, as they had refused to have their picture taken for this blog post. one was too camera shy, one was too tired & could barely keep his eyes open, and the third muttered something about "damn paparazzi" before storming off.  and then there was snow white, with her bright red carol channing-like smiling mouth, perfectly poised for the camera and thinking to herself, 'i wish prince charming would come my way soon and take me away from these seven nutters.'

plastic love

i hit the jackpot yesterday.
i found these great toys at a local discount store that sells items from liquidations, overstocks, and old warehouse stock. all of the toys pictured here were selling for under a dollar each, so naturally i couldn't resist purchasing them for my vintage collection.

some are marked with a copyright of 1985 (i still can't believe 80's is considered vintage these days...i feel so freakin' old!), and most of them are marked "made in hong kong for famus corporation in brooklyn, new york." (yes, it does say famus, not famous.)

my favorites are the tiny tiger metal tea set and the travel kit (with the pan am airline boarding pass/ticket cover!! how totally old school is that!?)

it's snack time!

primrose snack set by anchor hocking glass

last weekend i purchased a vintage milk glass
snack set from my favorite consignment shop.
it was marked 50% off, so i ended up paying $12.50 for the 8-piece set.
(woo-hoo, i love a bargain!)
although the original box is tattered and stained,
all of the cups & trays are in very good condition.

what could be a better snack than a mini cake with
strawberry frosting, whipped cream, and a cherry on top?

"a pleasing beverage"

sweeco instant cocoa tin, c. 1938

an excerpt from the tin:
SWEECO is "...made by a special secret blending and cooking process from full cream milk, pure cane sugar and high grade cocoa. Physicians have been recommending it for over a quarter of a century because it is so easily digested and so readily assimilated.
SWEECO is a food as well as a pleasing beverage."
